He stayed in the Far East after World War II, assisting Chiang Kai-shek in his war against Chinese Communists in the late 1940s.
The Flying Tigers of the 23rd Fighter Group went on to become one of the highest scoring fighter groups of World War II.
From 1942 until 1945, they destroyed over 1,000 Japanese aircraft.
They sank 184 enemy merchant ships, destroyed 817 bridges, 1,225 locomotives, and killed nearly 60,000 Japanese troops.
